The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is seeking a talented and motivated Backend Engineer to join our Digital Learning Capability Centre (DLCC). As a key member of our engineering team, you will design, build, and maintain the server-side systems that power our cutting-edge digital learning platforms. Our work spans artificial intelligence, gamification, immersive environments, and cyber-physical solutions, all aimed at revolutionising education.
At DLCC, you will collaborate closely with researchers, data scientists, and front-end developers to create scalable and robust APIs, microservices, and data pipelines. You will contribute to innovative projects such as intelligent tutoring systems, engaging learning games, and virtual laboratories. Your work will directly enable personalised learning experiences powered by AI, real-time collaboration in virtual spaces, and integration with physical lab equipment.
In this role, you will design and implement RESTful APIs and GraphQL services, manage relational and NoSQL databases, orchestrate containerized deployments on cloud infrastructure, and optimise system performance. You will work with modern technologies including Python, Node.js, Java, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS. You will also write comprehensive tests, participate in code reviews, and document architectural decisions to ensure high-quality and maintainable code.
We are looking for someone passionate about backend development who thrives in a dynamic research environment and is eager to explore emerging technologies. The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in software engineering and a desire to apply their skills to meaningful educational challenges. Prior experience in learning technologies is a plus but not required.

- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices supporting AI, gamification, and immersive learning platforms.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate front-end components, data analytics, and machine learning models.
- Implement and optimise database schemas, queries, and caching strategies using both relational and NoSQL databases.
- Deploy and manage applications on cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP) using containerisation and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes.
- Write unit, integration, and performance tests to ensure code reliability and system robustness.
- Participate in code reviews, contribute to architectural decisions, and document technical designs.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot production issues, and implement improvements to enhance scalability and uptime.
Kualifikasi
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Proven experience as a Backend Engineer or similar role with a strong portfolio of delivered projects.
- Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages — Python, Node.js, or Java.
- Solid experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB, Redis).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS/GCP) and containerisation technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Understanding of RESTful API design, microservices architecture, and message queuing systems (e.g., Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Experience with version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.
